GS1 announced the ratification by the EPCglobal Board of Governors on June 10 of the EPCglobal Standard for Discovery, Configuration and Initialization Version 1.0. The standard is designed to enable scalable reader management on the network, including device discovery, firmware management, and configuration requirements….Separately, GS1 Hong Kong in conjunction with Hong Kong SAR Government is piloting bar coding and RFID as tools for product authentication. Four companies are participating, including Nuance-Watson (a retailer at Hong Kong International Airport), Comvita (health supplement supplier), First Edible Nest (traditional Chinese ingredient supplier) and Po Sum On Medicine Factory Limited (Chinese medicine manufacturer). Select products are given a “VerCode,” which is a unique code for each item and enables customers to authenticate the item either over the internet or via text message. The RFID portion is being trialed at Nuance-Watson and at the First Edible Nest shop in Tsuen Wan’s Luk Yeung Galleria by providing an RFID enabled kiosk…The GRIFS (Global RFID Standards) Forum held kick-off meetings to bring together representatives from several standards bodies, end users and government to work towards harmonizing the 163 existing RFID standards. Participants included GS1, ISO, CEN, ETSI, ITU, IEEE, uID Center, AIM Global, AIAG, ODETTE. The GRIFS project is being coordinated by ETSI, CEN and GS1.
