Pharma Update – Bais Towards 2D
We are a bit cautious on RFID usage in the Pharma industry in the next several years as we see the industry is gravitating towards 2D bar codes to meet serialized tracking requirements. Most contacts tell us use of 2D is a more simple process, takes away the incrementally necessary engineering associated with RFID and requires less upfront infrastructure costs, particularly at the retail level. We continue to see RFID as a valid solution, and actually consider it to be ultimately superior as it will meaningfully reduce labor costs (consider the meaningful labor requirements to scan products at distribution which can be reduced with RFID). Nonetheless, we see it following use of 2D in most cases.

Most pharma manufactures and distributers already have very sophisticated bar code solutions in place. A great deal of time and effort has been invested in this area…the ROI for moving to RFID continues to be elusive.
